STAR TREK: TOS

Stephanie's Take

This series, being the first of the five, is a classic of course. It laid a solid foundation for the series to follow with it's unique style, characters and storylines. The strongest aspect of the show is the strong relationship between Spock, Kirk and McCoy. The way that Spock grounds Kirk to logic and reason, and how Bones makes sure he retains his humanity is obvious. These characters are very well developed, and though the minor characters are unique they are not as well developed as some other Star Trek series that manage to thoroughly develop many characters without compromising any one minor character. The plots, however, manage to be some of the best Star Trek has ever offered, although often times the solutions are simplistic, especially compared to the later series. But let's not compare it to the later series and appreciate it's cheesiness, because it has such spirit. Additionally, I think the TOS films are better than the TNG ones, except for First Contact.

Jeff's Take

The Star Trek film made in 2009 is what got me into Star Trek. Stephanie and I watched a couple of episodes before but I wasn't extremely interested until I saw the movie. Star Trek is a lot funnier than what I thought it would be. I never thought I would be a fan but now I understand why so many people like it. It's an addictive show. McCoy for one is a very underrated character. When someone thinks of Star Trek, they think of Kirk and Spock and not so much McCoy, but he's very funny. The guest characters, such as the Gorn Captain and Captain Pike in the chair, are funny and memorable. My favorite line from Season 1 is in "The City on the Edge of Forever" when Kirk tells a cop, referring to Spock "As you can see, my friend is Oriental."

Our Favorite Character(s) Spock is both of our favorite character in this series. Ostricized from the rest of the crew and dealing with the surpression of his human half, Spock deals with a lot of adversity yet remains an extremely loyal and steadfast first officer. His cool and calm demeanor, coupled with his brilliance, have caused me to find him highly admirable. I can't help but be immensely interested in a character who has perfect control of his emotions and never acts illogically. Additionally, he's beautiful. Plus, his sacrifice in Star Trek II is just heartbreaking. Jeff simply loves Spock because he performs the "Vulcan Grip." (his name for the vulcan neck pinch)
